PSC to provide image sensor capacity back-up for TSMC
Taiwan – Powerchip Semiconductor Corp. (PSC) has sealed a deal with Taiwan Semiconductor Mfg Co. Ltd (TSMC) to provide the latter with additional capacity for CMOS image sensors amid strong orders.
Aside from securing orders from OmniVision Technologies Inc., TSMC has extended its foundry partnership with Avago Technologies Ltd, which pushed TSMC to seek additional capacity for CMOS image sensors from PSC.
TSMC fabricates CMOS image sensors at its Fab 7 in Hsinchu, Taiwan. The company is already utilizing its full capacity to meet orders from OmniVision and Avago. However, TSMC will be utilizing PSC's 8in fabs as well to suffice the strong demand.
OmniVision and TSMC established a joint venture for CMOS image sensor backend production--VisEra Technology Co.--in 2003. Avago, meanwhile, has extended its foundry partnership with TSMC on SerDes core to 65nm production process. Avago has manufactured 1.3- and 2-megapixel CMOS image sensors at TSMC's 0.13µm technology.
