Samsung unveils new 3-megapixel CMOS image sensor for camera phones
South Korea – Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd recently introduced its new 3-megapixel CMOS image sensor with a 1/4in lens aperture ideal for ultra slim camera phones. The new 1.75µm pixel allows the lens aperture to reduce the size of the camera module by 30 percent, compared to the 2.25µm pixel 1/3in lens aperture 3-megapixel CMOS image sensors widely used in the market.
"Our 1.75um-pixel, 1/4-inch lens aperture 3-megapixel [CMOS image sensor] is a unique combination of Samsung's high resolution sensor technology and high speed serial interface that brings digital still camera-level picture quality to mobile handsets," says Yong-Hee Lee, vice president of Samsung's System LSI Division.
Samsung's new product is considered the alternative for the 1/4in lens aperture 2-megapixel CMOS image sensor. The company claims that the new image sensor shows no degrading in the picture quality compared to the 2.25µm pixel sensor.
The South Korea-based company will use 90nm technology to mass produce the new product in the first quarter next year. The chip utilizes Samsung's proprietary 90nm copper technology that lessens the distance between the micro-lens and the photo diode
